At Vintage Willows we are so insanely lucky to not only carry high-quality vintage items through Heck Yes Vintage, but we get to work up close and personal with the owner, Victoria Sofias. Victoria owns, runs, and operates Heck Yes Vintage, handpicking, and curating some of the most beautiful collections in Northern Colorado. (Did I mention how lucky we are?)

With Fall here and in full force, we asked Victoria how we can incorporate our new and vintage pieces into our Fall wardrobes this year!

What are your top tips for seamlessly integrating vintage fashion into a modern fall wardrobe? How can we balance the old with the new for a stylish look?

My biggest tip for incorporating oldies into your modern wardrobe is to never rule older items out of your wardrobe! If you love a style, whether you wore it in the 70s, 90s, or even a few seasons ago, you can still find fun and fresh ways to style your most loved pieces. I think a fun way we’re seeing this in what’s trending now is with all the leather!

There is TONS of fashion content out there nowadays for almost everyone’s tastes, using that as a tool and searching online for the piece you’re looking to style is something I think a lot of people are scared to do, but I highly recommend it if you’re ever unsure and could use a little guidance. With enough practice and trial, (and error) you’ll find the styles you prefer and feel the best in. But- Your 90s leather may just have a spot in your modern wardrobe.

Vintage pieces often have unique textures and patterns. How can we combine these distinctive features with fall trends to create a standout outfit?

If you are someone who loves to incorporate vintage into your wardrobe, I recommend making that vintage piece the ‘hero’ as I like to call it. Base every other part of your look on that to really have it be the stand-out item. Pair other components of your look back to that hero piece using complimentary colors and keeping the other aspects simple at first.

Are there specific eras or styles of vintage clothing that pair particularly well with modern fall fashion? Could you recommend some iconic vintage pieces that are versatile for mixing and matching?

We are definitely seeing an emphasis on the mid to late 90s comeback this fall and winter season. Comfortable and relaxed styles will always be timeless, but the 90s just did it in such a fun and inspiring way, we saw these causal looks everywhere from the runway to celeb nights on the town. A good oversized blazer, leather jacket, and your mid to low-rise bootcut jeans will be your best friends this fall & winter.

Layering is a key component of fall fashion. How can we effectively layer vintage garments with contemporary items to achieve a cozy yet fashionable autumn look?

I am a strong believer in everything layered. My icon when it comes to a layered look is the beloved Princess Di- she layered everything! One of my favorite styles inspired by Dianna is a turtleneck under a crew neck sweatshirt, this combo can be easily paired back to your fave denim and a boot, or leggings and a chunky sneaker.

Another thing to consider when dressing for fall fashion is that the jacket can make or break the whole look- a staple black trench, blazer, and denim jacket are pieces I would recommend. These items should be timeless and deserve your investment. The last few years and likely for a few more, the relaxed and oversized fits for jackets are key. A way that I like to consider buying investment pieces is by asking myself, “Will it still be cool in 20 years?” If the answer is yes, you should go for it.

Accessories can play a significant role in styling. What vintage accessories do you think work best with today's fall fashion? Any pro tips on incorporating vintage jewelry or bags into a modern ensemble?

A fun thing that is happening in fashion is the absolute excess of accessorizing that is happening. From a huge oversized bag to 3 belts that aren’t holding onto anything. Many of the styles of modern design, especially when it comes to bags, are things we have seen before, and can find vintage very easily. A mini shoulder bag, is and always has been, a classic must-have for just about any look.
